BEFORE GYM CLASS THAT AFTERNOON, THERE WEREN’T ANY comments about Alan in the locker room. An extra gym teacher, with his arms folded across his chest and a whistle hanging down around his neck, stood watch over the row of lockers where Alan was changing. Only it was just the two of them, because every other guy who’d had a locker in that row moved somewhere else.

It was the same after class, too.

It was like Alan had his own special section now.

But it wasn’t marked off by a sign that read VARSITY ATHLETES.

And I was thinking if there was a sign for him it would have read PRIME-TIME FREAK.
